Update: York Catholic students win gold medals, advance to Canada Wide Science Fair, May 17-21

Update 鈥 May 21, 2021 鈥 The Canada Wide Science Fair Award ceremony was held virtually last night in Ottawa. Three projects from our school board received an award! Please see updates in the story below.

The annual York Region Science and Technology Fair was held April 6 鈥 April 10, despite the pandemic and thanks to modern technology the 鈥淪ci-Tech鈥 Fair was held virtually this year!

The 丝瓜视频下载 congratulates its many students who put forth a project this year and thanks the event organizers for keeping the York Region Sci-Tech Fair running despite the challenges of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Overall, York Catholic students earned four Gold medals, two Silver medals, and two Honourable Mentions. Below is a list of the students and their projects that earned awards.

Gold Medal Winners

Pauline Botros

Pauline Botros, Grade 9 student at in Richmond Hill for her project, 鈥淎 Novel Approach Towards Constructing Bioplastic Out of Natural Waste.鈥 In addition to the Gold medal, Pauline also took home the Natural Resources Challenge Award.

Update聽 – Pauline won a Bronze Excellence Award at the Canada-Wide Science Fair!

Ian Patrick Tan
Koral Kulacoglu

Ian Patrick Tan and Koral Kulacoglu, Grade 10 students at in Markham for their project, 鈥淐ancer Detection with Histopathology Neural Networks.鈥 In addition to their Gold medal, Ian and Tan also received the Disease and Illness Challenge Award.

Update聽 – Ian and Koral won a Silver Excellence Award at the Canada-Wide Science Fair!

Jin Schofield
Sarvnaz Ale Mohammad

Jin Schofield and Sarvnaz Ale Mohammad, Grade 11 students at in Markham for their project, 鈥淐onchShell: A Wearable ASL Translator Leveraging Novel Machine Learning and Computer Vision.鈥 In addition to their Gold medal, Jin and Sarvnaz also received the Digital Technology Challenge Ottawa University Entrance Scholarship and York University Entrance Scholarship Cournoyea/ PazSoldan Peer Award.

Update聽 – Jin and Sarvnaz won a Silver Excellence Award, the Senior Engineering Innovation Award, and the Intermediate Senior University of Toronto Engineering Award at the Canada-Wide Science Fair!

Rafia Nadeem

Rafia Nadeem, Grade 10 student at St. Robert CHS in Markham for her project, 鈥淓valuation of Cinnamomum verum as a Therapeutic Approach in Diabetic Bombyx mori.鈥

Gold medalists will represent York Region at the Canada Wide Science Fair, which will take place virtually, from May 17th 鈥 21st. The 丝瓜视频下载 will be cheering these students on and wish them the best of luck at the national fair!

Silver Medal Winners

Sherry Shu, Grade 11 student at St. Robert CHS in Markham for her project, 鈥淎 Slippery Slope: Cleaning Up Oil Spills with Natural Methods.鈥 In addition to her Silver medal, Sherry received the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Award 1st Place.

Parisa Acharya and Shuhan Dai, Grade 11 students at St. Robert CHS in Markham for their project, 鈥淥peration Valor.鈥 In addition to their Silver medals, Parisa and Shugan received the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Award.

Honourable Mentions

Jade Fleming and Graden Lynch, Grade 7 students at St. Justin Martyrs CES in Markham for their project, 鈥淎ll About Fingerprints.鈥

Teresa Siby and Brooke D鈥橫ello, Grade 12 students at St. Robert CHS in Markham for their project, 鈥淢ind-controlled Osseointegrated Prosthetics.鈥 Teresa and Brooke also received the York Region Science and Technology Fair Communication and Presentation Award.
