丝瓜视频下载 Director of Education Domenic Scuglia will retire after a 41-year career promoting equity, excellence and faith in two Canadian provinces.

鈥淭he Board of Trustees is grateful for Domenic Scuglia鈥檚 many contributions to the 丝瓜视频下载, in particular for creating stability in our school board during the difficult days near the end of the pandemic,鈥 said Chair of the Board Elizabeth Crowe. 鈥淒om鈥檚 commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples was inspiring and it will be one of his lasting legacies in this board.鈥

Starting his career in 1982 as a physical education teacher, Mr. Scuglia later served as Vice Principal at Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham and Holy Cross CA in Woodbridge. He was later appointed Principal of St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Maple and the founding Principal of St. Maximillian Kolbe CHS in Aurora.

After spending his career at the 丝瓜视频下载, Mr. Scuglia moved to Regina Catholic School Division, where he was the Director of Education from May 2016 to June 2021. In July 2021, Mr. Scuglia returned to the 丝瓜视频下载 to serve as Director of Education.

Before becoming Director of Education, in addition to his teaching and administrative duties, Mr. Scuglia furthered the spread of rugby in this province by volunteering as the Director of Junior Rugby and later the President of Rugby Ontario.

鈥淒om has an amazing ability to connect with people, as is seen in the excitement that fills every school when he visits,鈥 said Chair Crowe.

Mr. Scuglia is known for his leadership, consensus-building and, particularly, his love of students.

Civics Lessons Through Sport: The 2022 World Cup /civics-lessons-through-sport-the-2022-world-cup/ Fri, 23 Dec 2022 15:17:38 +0000 /?p=50145 Continue reading "Civics Lessons Through Sport: The 2022 World Cup"]]> Written by Mr. O鈥橤rady, a Grade 7 teacher at Father John Kelly Catholic Elementary School

This year鈥檚 World Cup was very special, and very controversial.

This was the first time since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico that Canada had qualified for a World Cup. Our class decided to celebrate Canada鈥檚 participation in the World Cup by putting together a picture collage highlighting the matches to be played and the social, political and cultural issues surrounding them.

On Nov. 20, the World Cup began with the host country, Qatar, playing Ecuador and losing 2-0. Qatar was a controversial host country, as my class discussed, because of their restrictive laws concerning women and the way they treated the migrant workers. It was also pointed out by the class that their bid to host the World Cup was shrouded by evidence of bribery and corruption by FIFA.

In the first games of the Group Stage, the class witnessed the Iranian national team not singing their national anthem in support of protestors in their country who were demonstrating against their government鈥檚 treatment of women. At this game, there were Iranian fans who flew their country鈥檚 flag with 鈥淲OMEN鈥 written on it. Also, there were upsets in those early games, with both Argentina and Germany losing their matches. Canada, which we all were eagerly awaiting, lost to Belgium 1-0 with Alphonso Davies missing on a penalty shot. We also saw Cristiano Ronaldo score in Portugal鈥檚 opening game to become the first player to score in five World Cups.

Our class was excited that in Canada鈥檚 second game, Alphonso Davies scored Canada鈥檚 first-ever World Cup goal.

In the final games of the Group Stage, powerhouses like Belgium and Germany failed to advance. Morocco had the most points ever by an African team in the Group Stage.

In the knockout stage, all of our class鈥檚 favourites 鈥 England, Brazil, Portugal and Spain 鈥 lost. Beating the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, Argentina became the first team in World Cup history to win five shootouts. Morocco became the first team from Africa to make it to the semi-finals. France became the first team since 2002 to reach consecutive World Cup Finals, this time their opponent would be Argentina.

The final game on Dec. 18 had it all. In the opinion of many, it was the best World Cup Final ever. There were penalty kicks, extra time and a shootout to decide the champion. Argentina went up 2-0, only to have France respond by tying the game and sending it into extra time where Messi and Mbappe exchanged goals to send it into penalty kicks, where Argentina came out on top winning 4-2 and being crowned the 2022 World Cup Champion. The last time Argentina won the World Cup they were led by soccer (or football) legend, Diego Maradona.

The class really enjoyed watching and discussing the games and the political and social context behind the matches. It was a great way to discuss topics such as human rights and how governments treat their fellow citizens.

Our class invited other classes in the school to come down and look at the collage and engaged with the other students in seeing if they could remember what each picture meant with respect to the game.

This project was also fun, because it was the first World Cup in which we, as a class, could see the World Cup winner being awarded during the school year.

St. Elizabeth CHS RAP Students Debut Their First Album: ROOM 106 /st-elizabeth-chs-rap-students-debut-their-first-album-room-106/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 21:09:37 +0000 /?p=49890 Continue reading "St. Elizabeth CHS RAP Students Debut Their First Album: ROOM 106"]]> St. Elizabeth CHS Regional Arts Program students Justin Pascucci, Isabella Shahin and Darcy Wigston, are set to release their debut album at the end of November. The self-titled album features seven original pieces.

As instrumental students, Justin, Isabella and Darcy noticed their matched passion for the art of music while working together on a school project. Around the same time, after hearing them jamming together, one of their RAP teachers reached out to the trio, saying how impressed she was by their talent and the music she heard. She suggested they consider forming a band.听听

It was not long after that was created. ROOM 106 began as a jazz band, and over time they reworked their style and would now consider themselves a mixed-genre band, perhaps best summed up as rock fusion jazz. We wish ROOM 106 great success with its album, and we look forward to hearing more from them.
