Presenting the 2025 丝瓜视频下载 Christmas Card

As we journey through the beautiful season of Advent, we are pleased to share the results of one of our most cherished annual traditions, the 丝瓜视频下载 Christmas Card Contest.

Each year, students in Grades 6鈥8 express their faith, creativity and talents by designing artwork that reflects the true meaning of Christmas. The response continues to be extraordinary.

Once again, we received an impressive collection of submissions, each one demonstrating remarkable artistic skills and heartfelt reflections. The ongoing success of this contest speaks to the dedication of our students and staff, and the strong arts and faith culture within our schools.

Our school board Trustees, Director of Education and senior team members worked together to select the artwork that beautifully captured the true meaning of Christmas. This year, the two chosen cards are a powerful reminder that Jesus was born to bring love, hope and peace to our world.

We are proud to announce the two winning artists whose designs will represent the 2025 丝瓜视频下载 Christmas Card:

Update on the 丝瓜视频下载鈥檚 Multi-Year Financial Recovery Plan

Dear Members of the 丝瓜视频下载 Catholic learning community,听

The Board of Trustees and the Senior Staff Team are writing to thank you for your ongoing support and input into the 丝瓜视频下载鈥檚 Multi-Year Financial Recovery Plan (MYFRP) and to provide an update on its implementation.听

The MYFRP report recently presented at our August Board meeting, communicated that the 丝瓜视频下载 has maintained progress to date and is currently on track to eliminate its deficit within the timelines laid out at the start of this process.听

There is still much work to be done. The Board of Trustees and the Senior Team are working collaboratively to meet our budget challenges while continuing to prioritize student achievement, Catholic faith, equity, inclusion and well-being.听

Trustees remain dedicated to transparency and accountability to our community. We want you to know that monthly updates on the MYFRP鈥檚 progress will now be included in Regular Board Meeting agendas听 (you can click here to view board agendas). The first update will be posted by Friday evening in the September 30, 2025, Regular Board Meeting agenda.

Thank you for your continued support of publicly funded Catholic education, which nurtures generations of discerning believers and contributes precious benefits to the fabric of our society.

Yours in Catholic Education,听

The Board of Trustees and Senior Team are dedicated to the sound financial management of the money entrusted to us by the public. Unfortunately, the York Catholic DSB has faced several financial challenges in recent years, including declining school enrolment in our elementary schools, inadequate funding for special education, and rising transportation and IT infrastructure costs.

The provincial government requires school boards to operate within balanced budgets to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of our education system. Like many other School Boards across the province, the 丝瓜视频下载 is in a deficit, with a projected deficit of $10.5 million for the 2024-25 school year. Under provincial regulations, if a Board鈥檚 deficit is more than one per cent of its operating budget for two straight years it has to file a Multi-Year Financial Recovery Plan (MYFRP), which provides a path to return to balanced budgets. At yesterday鈥檚 Regular Board Meeting, the 丝瓜视频下载 Board of Trustees approved our MYFRP.

The Senior Team developed a series of recommendations, based on their professional expertise, on how the Board can balance its budget by the 2026-27 budget cycle while minimizing the impact on the day-to-day operations of our Board. As a Board of Trustees, our mandate was to ensure that our decisions do not impact the implementation of our Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP) and our commitments to promoting the Catholic faith, academic excellence, equity and inclusion, and well-being. At a Special Board Meeting held on January 21st, Trustees approved recommendations that reduced spending, in some areas to better align with Ministry funding, as well as enabling staff to find ways to increase revenues. These were then incorporated into the MYFRP for final approval on January 28th.

You can read more about the financial adjustments that were approved by the Board of Trustees, in the January 21 and January 28, 2025, Regular Board Meeting agendas. You can also learn more about the Board鈥檚 past financial reports on the 丝瓜视频下载鈥檚 Budget and Finance page.听

We are deeply grateful for your continued support of the 丝瓜视频下载. Together, we will navigate these challenges and remain the provincial leader in publicly funded Catholic education.

Early Reading Screening /early-reading-screening/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 14:26:59 +0000 /?p=60187 Continue reading "Early Reading Screening"]]>

Early Reading Screening

Beginning the 2024-2025 school year, all students in Year 2 of Kindergarten through Grade 2 in Ontario will participate in early reading screenings (ERS). This requirement by the Ministry of Education was in response to the听听and is endorsed by the听.

What is Early Reading Screening (ERS)?

Early Reading Screenings are quick checks of your child鈥檚 reading skills.

Why ERS?

Reading is a key skill for your child鈥檚 success in school and beyond. Early reading screening helps us understand each child鈥檚 reading skills and identify areas where additional support may be needed. The results will not affect your child鈥檚 grades but rather provide valuable insights to guide classroom instruction.

What Will the Screening Involve?

The screenings will be done one-on-one with your child at the beginning of the school year. They will include simple activities like identifying letters and sounds or sounding out words. No special preparation is needed.

Our screening will look at skills like:

  • Recognizing letters and their sounds
  • Blending sounds to make words
  • Understanding basic words and sentences
Communicating Results

Acadience, a Ministry-approved tool, was used to administer the screenings during the first months of school. The results of these screenings will be communicated in your child鈥檚 February report card (Kindergarten Communication of Learning or Elementary Provincial Report Card).

Your child鈥檚 results will indicate whether the benchmark was met. Benchmarks are obtained through a series of subtests, each providing an individual score linked to a specific measure that assesses essential literacy skills (refer to this听). These measures vary by grade and time of year to match grade-level expectations. The individual scores are combined into a composite score, which helps predict future reading abilities. Benchmark levels are categorized as At/Above Benchmark, Below Benchmark, or Well Below Benchmark (refer to this听). If your child鈥檚 score is below the benchmark, tiered support will largely be provided through whole-class and small-group instruction within the regular literacy blocks.

Valid and Reliable Data

The screening process with Acadience is built around benchmark levels that are research-determined. These levels are reliable because they provide consistent results over time across different conditions. They are also valid because they accurately measure essential literacy skills as intended. Additionally, the Acadience screenings are standardized assessments, meaning they are administered and scored in exactly the same way every time for every student.
