Dear ˿Ƶ (˿Ƶ) Students, Staff and Families,

As we approach the Easter season, we are invited to pause and reflect on the profound joy that faith brings to our lives. Easter is at the heart of the Catholic faith. This is a time when we celebrate hope, renewal and God’s transformative love. Easter shows us that the Lord is always with us, so we always have a reason to be joyful.

I want to recognize how ˿Ƶ schools bring joy to our wider community every year through their ShareLife fundraising. ShareLife Week occurred last week throughout the ˿Ƶ, and this was our way of helping the tens of thousands of people who are fed, housed and supported by ShareLife-funded agencies. Last year, the ˿Ƶ donated $128,000 to ShareLife, which is an incredible testament to your commitment to living your faith by helping others.

The ˿Ƶ community is defined by its people who understand how Catholic education can change lives. What makes this community truly special is you: the care and commitment you bring to it every day. Thank you for making the ˿Ƶ what it is.

The York Catholic Parent Involvement Committee (YCPIC) invites the York Catholic community to learn more about the future of AI in education through an interactive training session on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 from 7-9 p.m. at the Catholic Education Centre (320 Bloomington Road, Aurora).

The session led by Curtis Carmichael will help parents and guardians increase their digital literacy and build practical skills, ensuring all families — regardless of technical background — can advocate for their children and foster responsible, equitable technology use at home and in school.

The Minister of Education has approved updates to the Grades 7, 8, and 10 History curriculum, which will take effect in the 2026-27 school year.

These updates are described by the Ministry of Education as:

Students will learn about significant contributions of Black individuals and communities to Canada’s foundation as a nation, and the obstacles they faced in the pursuit of building an inclusive and prosperous country.

The Grade 10 History course will also have new learning on extreme political and social ideologies, the Holocaust and rising antisemitism, and the Holodomor famine in Ukraine.

˿Ƶ Students Help Students in the Holy Land

As part of our Lenten observances, the ˿Ƶ (˿Ƶ) community is proud to share that our schools will participate in a board-wide fundraising initiative to support Christian schools in the Holy Land. In late February and early March, students are asked to donate a toonie in exchange for an additional civvies day or a special school-based activity.

The money raised will support the Latin Patriarchate school system, which educates nearly 19,000 students of all faiths in 44 K–12 schools in Jordan, Palestine and Israel. This school system and the local Christian community have experienced significant financial hardship due to the pandemic and recent regional conflicts.

All funds raised by the ˿Ƶ will be donated to the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (EOHSJ). This lay Catholic organization is raising $12 million to repair school buildings and pay teacher salaries.

Dear York Catholic DSB Families,

Due toinclement weather expected later in the day,student transportation is cancelled for today (Wednesday, February 18,2026) for all of York Region.Schools remain open.

Please note that Ash Wednesday liturgies are cancelled. Schools will organize a “Beginning of Lent” liturgy at a later date,but ashes can only be distributed on Ash Wednesday. If you would like to receive ashes today, please consult your local parish..

As a result:

  • Schools remain open
  • For Parent(s)/Guardian(s) with children inElementary Schools:
    • Please use theSafe Arrival System if your child(ren) is absent due toinclement weather. Students who are unable to attend due to buses being cancelled must still be reported absent using the Safe Arrival System.
    • Hot Lunch programsat all˿Ƶ Elementary Schoolsare cancelled.
  • For Parent(s)/Guardian(s) with children inSecondary Schools:
    • Cafeteria Services at all˿Ƶ Secondary Schoolsare closed.
  • For ALL Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
    • Please exercise discretion in deciding whether to send your child to school today.
    • Thisdecision to cancel school transportation service isregion-wide, meaning all school buses, vans, and taxis are not operating.
    • Schools are open and parent(s)/guardian(s) can make alternate arrangements to transport their children to and from school.
    • As school transportation is cancelled in the morning, it will not operate in the afternoon.
    • Exams, tests, quizzes, excursions, charter trips, school programs, co-curricular activities, evening presentations, workshops, in-services, as well as parent meetings (e.g. Identification, Placement, and Review Committee Meetings, IPRCs) are cancelled for today, and will be rescheduled.
    • Virtual learning will continue as usual
    • Permits are cancelled for this evening unless by noon on theinclement weatherday, the Facilities Department determines that conditions are improving and permits can proceed.
    • In-person ContinuingEducation classes will be cancelled due toInclement Weather; remote Continuing Education classes, including Adult ESL classes, will continue.
    • Before and After-school Programs make every effort to remain open ininclement weather.However, the decision to open or to close early is up to the discretion of the Child Care Operator.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the Board of Trustees and the Senior Team held a Special Board Meeting to share information about their response to the Minister of Education .

At the Special Board Meeting, ˿Ƶ trustees and staff explained that we are on track to eliminate our deficit within the government’s timelines. The board also shared that ˿Ƶ students consistently lead the province in academic performance. Trustees committed to completing additional governance training before the end of the school year so they can best serve our school communities.
